Who We Are

The GW Knights of Columbus is a vehicle for Catholic men on campus to develop an authentic and mature Catholic spirituality.  As Knights, we devote ourselves to serving the community through service projects like painting St. Stephen Martyr's parish hall and raising money for the Kennedy Institute for developmentally disabled adults.  Furthermore, we continually seek to improve our spiritual lives through prayer (mass, rosary, etc.), retreats, and speakers.

What We Do

We participate in Newman Center activities and strive to be some of its most active members.  We also participate in service projects with Knights from DC, Virginia, Georgetown University, Catholic University, and Howard University.  We sponsor campus talks, retreats, and many other activities.  We work with other campus organizations to promote the sanctity of all human life.  We strive to live as Catholic gentlemen, proclaiming the Gospel by the daily examples of our lives.  We are committed to speaking the truth in the classroom and on campus.

When We Meet

We have biweekly meetings and monthly fraternal dinners.  Events are planned to best accommodate everyone’s busy schedule.  The council exists as a Catholic backdrop to student life and most members find joining does not conflict with their studies or other extra-curricular activities (sports, clubs, Greek fraternities, etc.).  We have activities and events which embody our four pillars: unity, charity, fraternity, and patriotism.

Membership Requirements

We accept men who are practical Catholic gentlemen and 18 years of age or older.  Someone interested first contacts us either via GW Knight or at KofC@gwu.edu.  We have several events throughout the academic year for those men who are considering joining.  If there is an interest to join, the candidate will sit for an interview with several brother Knights and our Chaplain.  Upon acceptance of an offer of admission, the candidate takes his First Degree (usually scheduled shortly after the interview) and becomes a Knight of Columbus.

Notable Knights

There have been many outstanding Knights since its inception in 1881.  They are found in virtually every aspect of life.  Members include: Vince Lombardi, John F. Kennedy, George “Babe” Ruth, Resprentative Jim Langevin (D-RI), and Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL).  While this is only a small list of easily recognizable names, everyday Knights world-wide work to make a difference in our society, which makes them truly outstanding.
