Hello, I am Fr. Peter Giovanoni, the chaplain here at the GW Newman Center. I was born in western New York state and moved to western Maryland before I started school. I went to the University of Maryland at College Park where I studied astronomy and physics. I earned a BS in both and an MS and PhD in astronomy. I was actively involved in the Catholic Student Center the whole time I was there. My time there was an important part of my growth as a person. After getting my PhD I taught at the university for a year, and then decided to answer the call to the priesthood.
I was accepted by the archdiocese of Washington and entered seminary at Theological College here in DC. I was ordained in 2001 and assigned as parochial vicar at St. Peter’s parish in Olney, MD. I was next sent to be parochial vicar at Holy Comforter-Saint Cyprian parish in DC. In July 2007 I began my assignment here as chaplain at the GW Newman Center.
I am looking forward to being back in the university setting. I found my time at university a rewarding, joyful, and engaging experience for all aspects of my life. I hope I can assist in making it so for you also, especially when it comes to your relationship with God.
